Q&A w/ Sora Ayame on Marvelous, Las Vegas, Senka, Unagi, Marigold + more!

By: Pep S. Caro

Marvelous Pro Wrestling is a company that inherited the legacy of the hard hitting Japanese wrestling style from the 1980s All Japan Women’s Pro Wrestling and the 1990s and 2000s GAEA. The promotion, founded by CRUSH GALS member Chigusa Nagayo and one of the most influential wrestlers of her generation, is enjoying a great moment as it begins its tenth anniversary activities.

The atmosphere in Marvelous and women’s wrestling has become more lively after the debut of two young wrestlers whose red and blue leotards remind us of the iconic CRUSH GALS. They are rookies Senka Akatsuki and Sora Ayame. Two wrestlers of the same age who debuted practically at the same time and seem destined to be partners and rivals throughout their careers, just as Chigusa and Lioness Asuka were in their time.

After participating in the Marvelous 9th anniversary tag team tournament, I was able to talk with Sora Ayame, in what was her first interview with any international media outlet. Sora was very kind to answer all the questions that covered a variety of topics.

Monthly Puroresu:

You are one of the Rookies that made her debut in the end of 2024. Why did you decided to become a Professional Wrestler?

Sora:

I admired Unagi Sayaka-san and wanted to become a wrestler like her. And I wanted to be in the same ring with her.

Monthly Puroresu:

You debuted in MARVELOUS, an organization that can be considered your home. Why did you decide to join MARVELOUS?

Sora:

Unagi Sayaka san recommended me to join a trial training at the Marvelous Dojo. The seniors of Marvelous taught me so kindly. I really liked it. Then I decided to join the dojo.

Monthly Puroresu:

Your debut match was against Aja Kong, Pro Wrestling Legend. How did you feel during this match? What do you think you learned from stepping into the ring for the first time?

Sora:

To be honest, after my opponent was announced, I was scared until I stepped into the ring. After the match started, I was not afraid anymore, but it was very difficult just to move around Aja Kong-san because she was so big. I felt different kinds of pain on the ring compared to the ones during training.

Monthly Puroresu:

In your second match, you represented MARVELOUS in their match at Comic Con. Do you think the atmosphere was different because it was outside of a typical professional wrestling venue?

Sora:

Yes! The atmosphere was totally different. Most of the people had never seen pro-wrestling before, so I was even more nervous because I didn’t feel like everyone was cheering for us.

Monthly Puroresu:

In January, you faced Senka Akatsuki, your teammate and rival in MARVELOUS, for the first time. The result was a 10-minute time limit draw. How did you feel in this match? What do you think you learned from facing someone from your generation?

Sora:

Senka and I are the same age. Although we are completely different in size, I never want to lose against her, so I was really frustrated that I couldn’t beat her that time. When you fight against wrestlers in the same generation, you can fully express your desire not to lose, and I think I learned how not to lose mentally after that match.

Monthly Puroresu:

We know Unagi Sayaka holds a special place in your heart. How important was it for you to face her, team up with her, and ultimately be chosen by her to participate in her self-produced show at Ryogoku Kokugikan on April 26th?

Sora:

It was one of my dreams as a pro wrestler to participate in Unagi san’s event, so I was very happy when it was decided. Moreover, it was a big match at Ryogoku Kokugikan, and I faced Senka again. Although I lost the match, I was able to participate in the first match at Unagi san’s event at Ryogoku Kokugikan by myself. This gave me confidence.

Monthly Puroresu:

In April, MARVELOUS returned to the United States and had a show in Las Vegas. You had the special opportunity of making your international debut in less than 6 months since your debut. You faced Nyla Rose, former AEW Women’s World Champion and member of MARVELOUS. How did you feel on this tour? Were you surprised when you saw the support of international fans?

Sora:

It was a great experience for me to be able to compete in the U.S. only four and a half months after my debut. Nyla Rose was big, strong and scary. Her pressure was very strong as well. But the fans cheered for me so much, and I remember that it gave me a lot of strength in the ring.

Monthly Puroresu:

MARVELOUS is currently feuding with Marigold. You participated in a 5-on-5 tag team elamination match at Marigold’s Korakuen Hall show on April 25th. How did you feel during this match? Do you think you have to even the score with Kizuna Tanaka?

Sora:

I believe that Marvelous wrestlers train harder than the ones from Marigold. So, I went into the ring and wanted to fight with everything I got. I was a representative for Marvelous Pro Wrestling in the event and because of that I had a lot of pressure in the ring. Kizuna Tanaka is a senior wrestler but only for a year. Our sizes are not so different, so I want to win against her next time for sure.

Monthly Puroresu:

If you could bring any opponent in the world, you haven’t faced yet, who would you choose?

Sora:

I choose Giulia. When I was starting in Pro Wrestling, she was one of the first pro-wrestlers that I met.

Monthly Puroresu:

Could you tell us about your hobbies? What’s a typical day like in your life? For example, a day when you don’t have a match.

Sora:

My hobby is baking sweets. But lately I haven’t been able to make much. When I don’t have matches, I just sleep.

Monthly Puroresu:

Thanks! To conclude this interview, do you have any message for your fans around the world?

Sora:

Thank you for your support. I’ll continue to fight very hard with my style.

We would like to thank Manuel Ish for the Art Direction, Hirohisa Okohara for the translation and the Marvelous Pro Wrestling team for all the facilities provided to conduct this interview.
