Dramatic Dream Team (DDT) continues innovating its brand of sports entertainment – which masterfully blends the puroresu style specific to Japan with the sort of gimmicks and dramedy familiar to fans of the Attitude Era – and perhaps none have bought into its system more than double-champion Chris Brookes.
The UK product has created a special connection with fans in Japan throughout matches of all types. From the Lego Casket Match vs. Shunma at this year’s DayDream Believer that rewarded him the DDT Extreme Championship, to his Yin & Yang work as one-half of a tag-team with entertainer Antonio Honda, the 6’4″ Brit never fails to deliver inside the squared circle.
Ahead of his 6-man tag match at this year’s multi-promotional CyberFight Fest, Brookes was gracious enough to take a few questions from Monthly Puroresu.
Monthly Puroresu: Tell us why DDT has become such a unique and exciting brand of wrestling? You seem to thrive over there — what makes it such an ideal landing spot for Chris Brookes?

Chris Brookes: DDT recently reproduced some shirts that they’d first sold maybe a decade ago and the back print of the design says “That’s Sports Variety Show” which although a little grammatically questionable I feel really sums up the ethos of DDT. DDT is absolutely a variety show. Perhaps too often categorised as comedy due to the ease at which funny things can go viral. You get every style in DDT and not just that the roster all thrive in excelling at those various styles. I think DDT best caters to the idea of having something for everyone in 2021. What makes it an ideal landing spot for me? I guess I like to be a variety wrestler. I always aimed to be someone who could work in any spot or style and I guess that’s why DDT is fun and challenging for me.

Monthly Puroresu: Throughout 2020 and 2021 you have helped to produce several shows with DDT. Are you planning to do more shows in the near future?

Chris Brookes: Absolutely! When scheduling allows. The Produce Shows are part of DDT’s initiative to not just attract but cater content towards an international audience and you can see that now with the That’s J-PW show they’re producing for TJPW. I’ve done three production shows so far and I’m sure it’s not the last you’ve seen of them.

Monthly Puroresu: How are you finding tagging with Antonio Honda as “The European Connection” in the Ultimate Tag League Tournament?

Chris Brookes: It’s fun, something new. I was pretty surprised that we got put together for the Tag League. We’re the only team in the league without any real experience together but once again going to the variety thing I think we’re providing something different. Honda is a very unique character and it’s been fun playing off that.

Monthly Puroresu: You are dual champion in DDT, does that mean extra responsibility in the ring and extra title defenses? Do you see it sort of as being ‘the guy’ nowadays when you capture two titles in the same promotion?

Chris Brookes: I think you always feel more responsibility when you’re holding a title for a company. As for defences if anything I’d like to be doing more. I don’t see it as being the guy in any way. I think that would be pretty egotistical but I do feel proud holding DDT belts. Especially ones with the history they both do. I just hope I can do justice to holding them.

Monthly Puroresu: The Extreme Division Championship is exciting because you have the power to choose any stipulations you like for matches. Have you thought of any matches you would like to have when defending the title?

Chris Brookes: Of course! But telling them would spoil the surprise…

Monthly Puroresu: During your time in DDT, you have wrestled with and against fellow Brit, Drew Parker, several times. What’s it like working with Drew and who else from the UK do you dream of facing in Japan?

Chris Brookes: It’s always fun fighting with or against Drew. We’ve fought so many times through the years and I’ve seen him grow to be such a confident and capable wrestler. Sometimes we get to tag and that’s always fun as well. He’s come over to DDT a couple times. I’ve gotten to go over to BJW and do things with him. I get to experience all these things with my best friend so I’m very fortunate. I’d be remiss if I didn’t say Kid Lykos, right? CCK isn’t a thing anymore but I’d love to face him.

Monthly Puroresu: Over the last several months you have had a strong rivalry against Saki Akai. Do you think things between the two of you are over, and what’s it like preparing for & wrestling a Joshi pro like Saki?

Chris Brookes: I hope they’re not! I think we brought something special out of each other. In the lead up to it I was just excited. I think it was a chance for Akai to show everyone how capable she really is but I think we can still do more. I’d love to fight her again. I don’t look at it as fighting a Joshi in the sense of preparing any differently. She’s a wrestler with credentials that speak for themselves just like anyone else. I prepared for Saki Akai the wrestler!

Monthly Puroresu: In just a few weeks, at the first ever Cyberfight Festival you are going to be teaming up with The37Kamiina to take on Damnation in a 6-man tag match. What can people expect from this one?

Chris Brookes: Expect to see exactly what DDT is all about! There’s pressure there. NOAH are also presenting a 6-Man of their own and I’m sure that’s in the back of everyone’s minds in the match. I’m sure everyone will be focused on showing their best. Except for Sasaki. He’s probably not even aware the match is happening.

Chris Brookes: They’re so different that of course there are different things to accomplish there but now my focus is on the EXTREME title and Ironman title. I’m not thinking about goals elsewhere.
