On June 4th, Shun Skywalker made a surprise announcement at Korakuen Hall and told the crowd on hand that his 12 year career with Dragongate was coming to an end. Skywalker told the shocked crowd that he was leaving Dragongate.
In a new report by Tokyo Sports, one of Skywalker’s top rivals and 20 year Dragongate veteran YAMATO weighed in on Skywalker departing from Dragongate.
A brutally honest YAMATO stated that he doesn’t feel the Skywalker departure will be a huge loss for Dragongate. YAMATO indicated that Dragongate overcame the past losses of Shingo Takagi and CIMA and believes they will do the same once Skywalker officially leaves.
From YAMATO:
“I certainly don’t think it’s such a huge loss. We’ve had much bigger holes open up before. Whether it was Shingo Takagi or CIMA, we overcame those and here we are today. I’ve been watching Dragon Gate for 20 years, and every time I watch, I think, ‘Dragon Gate really is interesting,’ and my appreciation is renewed. I’m fighting myself, but I always think the young guys’ attitude in the ring—or rather, their pro-wrestling—is the most interesting part. I have absolutely no concerns,” (English translation via Deepl.com)
Since 2018, YAMATO has battled Shun Skywalker in countless tag team matches and numerous singles encounters. The rivalry between the two will be coming to a halt with Skywalker’s departure.
YAMATO seemingly feels confident that a young star will step up and fill the void that will be left by Skywalker.
