With their first anniversary event at Korakuen Hall (April 24th) fast approaching, the women’s hardcore and deathmatch puroresu unit, PROMINENCE, held a press conference in Tokyo on April 5th.

The group began their journey in 2022 with a pre-founding match in January, followed by an official founding match on April 24th that same year. The use of Korakuen Hall, the venue for the group’s first anniversary match, was offered up as a gift from Takashi Sasaki of Pro Wrestling FREEDOMS, whose group had rights to the hall.

According to leader of PROMINENCE Risa Sera, the order of the matches shall only be announced on the day of the event, in time with the entrance music. Match cards were subsequently announced, with Suzu Suzuki’s opponent in the last match of her 10-match series being decided as Jun Kasai. Both fighters were eager to express their enthusiasm for the upcoming match.

“I’m beating Jun Kasai”, says a confident Suzu Suzuki. “Deathmatches have always been the highlight of PROMINENCE’s shows and how we close tournaments. But because I’ve been losing thus far, part of me was honestly afraid that audiences would start losing interest…” she tearily continues. “Still, nothing I’ve experienced in all my previous matches have been a mistake — they’ve only made me stronger. I’m not just basing this on my youth or vigor. On April 24th, I’m surpassing Charisma Kasai, and I’m showing everyone how Suzu Suzuki is the new Charisma of the Puroresu world.”

The deathmatch on April 24th will be the last match in Suzu’s 10-match series and will be held under fluorescent lights. In response to Suzu’s comments, Jun Kasai says the following. “I’m greatly honored to have been chosen as Suzu Suzuki’s final opponent. But, for someone who hasn’t won a single match out of ten to beat me, that just seems a bit ridiculous — it has nothing to do with whether they’re a man or a woman. So at Korakuen Hall, you better show me that you’re not just talk.

I know you’ll come with the intention of winning, and you have to show me exactly what you mean. Also, did you think fluorescent lights alone would be enough for the tournament? It wouldn’t be my usual way of celebrating the end of a 10-match tournament, but I’ll prepare a nice little surprise for you. With that said, you’ll have that to look forward to on April 24th.”

In her 10-match series, Suzu Suzuki has not yet won a single round. Previous opponents include Masashi Takeda, Takashi Sasaki, Drew Parker, among others. “In the beginning, I wasn’t sure what I could do to win against an opponent who was larger than me. I relied on force and alone for the earlier matches, but as I progressed, I came to see plenty of moments where I had a chance of winning, and that gave me confidence,” says Suzu.

Asked about his thoughts on Suzu’s performance so far, Jun Kasai has this to say: “Hardcore or deathmatch, I think all formats are more or less the same. And like I said before, it has nothing to do with whether you’re a man or a woman, Suzu is able to transcend these things and has an excellent sense for the deathmatch. I’m not trying to flatter her or anything. If I were a fan of PROMINENCE, I’d show everyone a good, close match where I’d almost win, and yell Suzu’s praises after.

But I don’t want to be part of that farce, and that’s because I think Suzu is better than that. If I win on the day of the match, whether it happens at the beginning or the end of the event, I’m walking out of the ring and I’m not saying a single word. You know what that would do? It’d make the atmosphere absolutely unbearable. So Suzu, if you don’t show up with the real intention of winning, everything might just slip away. Now with all that in mind, come take on Jun Kasai.”
