Goddess of Stardom Tag League Final Review – 12.04.22

By: Trent Breward

Eight years after Nanae Takahashi won the Goddess of Stardom Tag League, she did so once more. This time there was no Pirate Princess by her side, just the immovable force that is Yuu.

Awaiting them in the final was one of the company’s most experienced teams in AphroditE, and the former Tag Team Champions took it to the outsiders with a mixture of Saya’s athleticism and Utami’s power. It was a back and forth match through the first three quarters of proceedings, but as the match kept going the action locked in on two individuals.

Saya Kamitani found herself trying to fend off Yuu, and the size differential proved to be a hurdle the Wonder of Stardom Champion struggled to overcome. Several times Utami was needed to help sway the tide, including saving Saya from a second rope powerbomb. Eventually the pure power of the heavyweight overwhelmed Saya, especially once Utami took some friendly fire in the form of a misaimed wheel kick. With Nanae Takahashi keeping Utami trapped on the outside, a Last Ride Powerbomb folded the Phoenix in half, and just like that 7Upp had won the Tag League.

There was a little luck that went Nanae and Yuu’s way through the night. The schedule was not kind to AphroditE, who had to wrestle back to back matches, having to defeat the Goddess of Stardom Tag Team champions just to make the final. They managed to get the win in good time, but their strategy came back to bite them. Saya spent a lot of time as the legal woman in this match too. Kamitani’s experience against Natsupoi no doubt helped her put away the High Speed Fairy, but it sapped her stamina, leaving her vulnerable against a rampaging Yuu in the final moments of the show.

It wasn’t the only bit of fortune that fell the victor’s way. MaiHime only had to score one point to knock 7Upp out of the running and advance to the final themselves. However a momentary hesitation from Himeka as she looked to hit her Running Powerbomb gave Hazuki the time she needed to free herself and surprise the Jumbo Princess with a Hazukistral pin.

Owning the all important tie breaker against Fukuoka Double Crazy, all 7Upp had to do was defeated Natsuko Tora and Ruaka. The Oedo Tai duo put up a great fight, with Ruaka nearly scoring a massive upset with a nearfall on Nanae after hitting the Freezer Bomb. It was closer than they would have liked, but Nanae finished the job against the youngster and booked their ticket to the final. Importantly, they were able to rest for half the show while the other block was decided.

Nanae Takahashi and Yuu have now booked themselves a shot at the Goddess of Stardom Tag Titles against Tam Nakano and Natsupoi, who came out to greet them after being awarded their tournament rings. Tam and Poi serenaded their future opponents with a song and dance (from Nanae Takahashi’s old idol group), which seemed to impress Nanae but Yuu was not indulging the theatrics. The champions have proven to be a strong team, only losing twice in the tournament, but this should prove to be their toughest test yet if they want to keep the titles into 2023.

It’s the latest match in what has become a running theme for the Dream Queendom show on December 29. STARDOM versus the Outsiders, with several matches featuring non-contracted talent squaring off with established STARDOM talent.

Rapid Fire Takeaways

  • Momo Kohgo’s love of Saki Kashima hasn’t exactly been kept a secret, and it was out in full display when her and Mayu faced Kashima and Fukigen Death. Koho was sporting the full fangirl attire: headband, a decorated fan and a couple of light sticks. The overt display clearly bothered Mayu, who expressed her frustrations visually in the ring and verbally backstage.
  • KaWild Venus had to make a mid-tournament change to Wa-Kawild, with Waka Tsukiyama subbing in for the injured Mina Shirakawa. Unfortunately for Waka the losing streak continued, with SAKI only winning one match – the one match Mina Shirakawa was involved in.
  • While they didn’t impress on the final score tally, Saya Iida and Hanan once more put on a fun showing in the undercard as the wing-gori team. That continued tonight against New Eras. No surprise given the chemistry Iida has with both MIRAI and Ami Sourei
  • Now that Yuu has convincingly pinned the Wonder of Stardom Champion, the door has now opened for a potential challenge for the belt in 2023.That is of course if Saya Kamitani can defeat Haruka Umesaki at Ryogoku Hall.
  • It’s rare to see blood in a STARDOM ring, but Giulia was bleeding quite early in her match against Black Desire. It would seem Momo Watanabe caught her clean on the brow during one of their exchanges. Those two have only faced off in singles action once before, but given the fire between them it will be appointment viewing when they do so again.
  • AphroditE might not have won the tournament, but they did claim a victory over the champions at least. It’s some solace and gives them a reason to challenge in the future if they feel so inclined. Only FWC have won the belts twice as a team, so it’s rarified air for Utami and Saya if they can get there.
