Q&A with Tsukushi, Ice Ribbon’s outgoing champion

Ice Ribbon has a growing, and dedicated following in the West – one of the least toxic fanbases I’ve ever encountered, a truly good mix of people who come together on Club Ice Ribbon and the wonderful subreddit (run by u/LeloucheOTR) While my knowledge of Ice Ribbon, like many of our readers’ I presume, is somewhat limited… I have absolutely loved streaming the bigger shows on NicoNico and sidelining in conversations with talents like Yappy, Thekla (now with STARDOM), and most recently their outgoing champ Tsukushi Haruka.

Though we may live worlds apart, it’s easy to connect with the Ice Ribbon talent because of their sheer love for pro wrestling, a love that shines through inside Ice Ribbon’s squared circle. Whether in a theatrical sequence or a serious bout for one of their main title belts, it’s easy to see why the so-called “hipster joshi” promotion has developed a cult following.

Monthly Puroresu: We’ve got to start with your recent shocking retirement announcement – Weekly Pro Wrestling named you a rising star in Joshi wrestling, and your legacy as champion seemed to just be growing! What went into your decision to retire now?

Tsukushi: Well, I’m turning 25 this year. It’s been 12 years since my debut – I’ve spent half of my life as a professional wrestler. With limited time to enjoy our lives, I want to take on new challenges and become a stronger person, so I decided to chart a new path forward.

Monthly Puroresu:  ShuProはあなたを女子プロレスの新星と名付け、チャンピオンとしての伝説はますます大きくなっているようでしたね。今回、引退を決意された理由は何でしょうか？

Tsukushi:今年25歳を迎えます。デビューして12年、人生の半分をプロレスラーとして過ごしました。人生に限りある時間の中で、新しい事にチャレンジしたいと言う思いが強くなり、新しい道へ行く事を決断しました。

Monthly Puroresu: Let’s rewind a bit, shall we? What inspired you to become a pro wrestler?

Tsukushi: I first saw professional wrestling when I was three years old; my dad actually liked professional wrestling so we went to see it together! When I was a nursery school student, I watched All Japan Women’s Pro Wrestling – I loved Nanae Takahashi, a star who shined in the ring. It was then I developed a dream to stand in the same ring and become a pro-wrestler.

Monthly Puroresu: さあ、始めましょう！ まず、あなたの遍歴についてのお話をお聞きします。 プロレスラーになろうと思ったきっかけは何ですか？

Tsukushi: 初めてプロレスを見たのは、3歳の頃 父がプロレスが好きで一緒に見に行ってました。保育園生の頃、全日本女子プロレスを観戦して リングの上でキラキラ輝いてる高橋奈七永選手に憧れて 同じリングに立ちたいと言う夢ができ、プロレスラーになりました。

Monthly Puroresu: Can you tell me what your relationship with Tsukasa Fujimoto has been like? How do you perceive she carries herself?

Tsukushi: She might be senior ranking, but I love her like a big sister. I believe I’ve become the woman I am today, because I met Tsukasa Fujimoto.

Monthly Puroresu: 藤本つかささんとの関係性はどのようなものだったのでしょうか？そして彼女の身のこなしをどのように受け止めていますか？

Tsukushi:先輩ですが、お姉ちゃんのような大好きな存在です。藤本つかさと出逢えたから今の自分がいると思っています。

Monthly Puroresu: How would you describe yourself in 5 words?

Monthly Puroresu: Let’s get down to business, Ice Ribbon is competing in a growing Joshi space. You guys have a big push to democratize Ice Ribbon fandom with the new YouTube subscription service. Can you tell us about that, and can you sense a lot of excitement from the fans in the West?

Tsukushi: Ice Ribbon is not only limited to Japan! We want to bring happiness through wrestling to the whole country. And really to the world, so I’m excited that people from various countries are now able to watch and support us through YouTube.

Monthly Puroresu: アイスリボンのファンダムを民主化するために、YouTubeの新しい定額制サービスを大々的に展開されていますね！ 欧米のファン達の盛り上がりが感じられますが、アイスリボンがYouTubeに登場したことで新たな活動の可能性が見えてきましたか？Tsukushi:アイスリボンは、日本だけにはとどまらず 全国全世界にプロレスでHappyを届けたいと思っています。 なので、YouTubeを通して色んな国の方が視聴して応援してくれてる事が嬉しいです。

Monthly Puroresu:: In America — or even in Japan, like with Kenny Omega — wrestlers use SNS to popularize their careers. And, it gives fans unprecedented access into the lives of wrestlers. Do you like being able to give fans a glimpse into your life, or does it make you feel pressure?

Tsukushi: Social media is really a marker of the times we live in. This day and age, using Twitter has made it possible for wrestlers to make the most of our time. The wonderful thing is that even if you’re far away from home or in a different country, you can communicate your activities and thoughts. Ice Ribbon wants to let everyone explore what we’re all about!

Monthly Puroresu: アメリカでは、さらに日本でもケニー・オメガのように、レスラーがSNSを利用して自分のキャリアを広めています。そして、ファン達はレスラーの生活に今までにないほどの近さで触れることができるのです。ファンに対して自分の私生活を見せることについてはどう思いますか？ プレッシャーを感じたりはしませんか？
Tsukushi: 今の時代、SNSと言う便利な物がある事によって 離れていても国が違くても、活躍や思いを伝える事が出来ます。なので、私達の事を沢山の方に知ってもらいたいと思っています。

Monthly Puroresu: Outline for us some techniques you want to master, or achievements you’ve yet to conquer that you’re planning on.

Tsukushi: I want to defend the ICE x ∞ belt until 5.4 at the Yokohama Budokan – my final goal, is to retire with the belt in my possession.

Monthly Puroresu: これから身につけたい技術や、挑戦してみたいことを教えてください。
Tsukushi: 5.4横浜武道館大会まで、ICE×∞ベルトを守りきって ベルトを持ったまま引退する事が最後の目標です。

Monthly Puroresu: I realize you once trained with Manami Toyota, someone who many historians consider the best female wrestler to ever lace up a pair of boots. What was that experience like?

Tsukushi: Right after my wrestling debut, I fought Aja Kong. Afterwards she said, “Tsukushi’s dropkick is the best dropkick I’ve seen since Manami Toyota – t’s a dropkick that can get you money.” It was a proud moment, I was happy to hear that. From there, I got to meet Manami Toyota! She is like a mother to me in wrestling. She gave me her technique, the “Japanese Ocean Suplex Hold,” and treated me like one of her own.

A decade ago, Tsukushi faced Aja Kong for the first time. Here are some highlights from iceribbon

Monthly Puroresu: 豊田真奈美さんと練習されたことがあるそうですが、豊田さんは史上最高の女子プロレスラーと言われている方です。その経験はどのようなものだったでしょうか？

Tsukushi:  デビューして間もない頃、アジャコング選手と初めて対戦した時に、『つくしのドロップキックは豊田真奈美以来のドロップキックだ。お金の取れるドロップキックだ。』と嬉しいお言葉を頂きました。そこから、豊田真奈美さんに出会いました。 豊田さんはプロレスのお母さんのような存在です。豊田さんの技、『ジャパニーズ・オーシャン・スープレックスホールド』を頂いたり、とても可愛がって頂きました。

Monthly Puroresu: If you could pick your own nickname, what would it be?

Tsukushi: Even if I experience some kind of rebirth, I will be known as Tsukushi Haruka!

Monthly Puroresu: 自分のリングネームを決めるとしたら、どんな名前にしますか？
Tsukushi: 生まれ変わっても『春輝つくし』にします。

Monthly Puroresu: What’s something you enjoy doing outside of wrestling?

Tsukushi: Shopping, and watching movies!

Monthly Puroresu:  プロレス以外で何か好きな事や趣味などはありますか？
Tsukushi:ショッピングと映画鑑賞

Monthly Puroresu: You were quoted in ShuPro as saying “people are asking for things because they expect something from me. It would be worse if no one was asking anything, and if this year goes to waste then people won’t be interested in me.” Looking back on your 2021, do you think you satisfied your fans? And, how do you see people’s perception of you has changed in one year’s time?

Tsukushi: Well, I had a match at Arena Mexico in CMLL, became a producer of Ps’Party, and wrestled a tournament. I also won the ICE x ∞ belt. Previously, I tried and failed 7 times, but this time was different. As Tsukushi Haruka, I have changed a lot in 2021!

Monthly Puroresu:  2021年を振り返ってみて、ファンを満足させることができたと思いますか？また、1年後に人々のあなたへの見方はどのように変化していると思いますか？ 週プロで「みんなが私に何かを求めてくるのは、私に何かを期待しているからだ」とおっしゃっていましたね。”誰もが何も求めなくなる方がよくない事だし、この1年を無駄にしてしまったら、みんな僕に興味を持たなくなる。”とも言っています。
Tsukushi: メキシコのアレナメヒコで試合をさせて頂いたり、Ps’Partyのプロデューサーになって大会を開催したり、7回挑戦して巻けなかった、ICE×∞のベルトを巻いたり 春輝つくしとして、とても大きく変化した2021年でした。

Monthly Puroresu: Can tell me what the energy is like in Ice Ribbon’s locker room following the departure of PROMINENCE?

Tsukushi: It’s left many who are staying more hungry, they’re making a point to say – “I will be the top of Ice Ribbon!”

Monthly Puroresu: PROMINENCE脱退後、アイスリボンのロッカールームでの様子を教えてください。
Tsukushi: 『私がアイスリボンのトップに立つ』と、強い意志を持った選手が多いです。

Monthly Puroresu:  Who on the Ice Ribbon roster do you see as the next big breakout star?

Tsukushi: Honestly, all the rookie wrestlers in Ice Ribbon have a lot of momentum. I’m looking forward to seeing who will be the next top.

Monthly Puroresu:アイスリボンの中で、次にブレイクしそうなのは誰ですか？

Tsukushi: 今のアイスリボン若手、皆勢いがあります。なので、次誰がトップになるのか楽しみです。

Monthly Puroresu: You mentioned in ShuPro last year wanting to convey your emotions and feelings by doing things like, “watching films and reading magazines, and watching people cut promos in other promotions.” Can you tell us who you watched most closely, who inspires you?

Tsukushi: Tenshin Nasukawa, a mixed martial artist. He is my favorite fighter, attractive and with a style that comes through on YouTube and in his fights. He really has a lot of things to say, so I follow closely.

Monthly Puroresu:  昨年の週プロで、”映画を見たり雑誌を読んだり、他のプロモーションでプロモを編集する人を見たり “することで、自分の感情や気持ちを伝えたいとおっしゃっていましたね。 その中で一番よく見ていた人、刺激を受けた人が居たら教えていただきたいです。
Tsukushi: 格闘家の那須川天心選手 YouTubeも試合もとても魅力的な大好きな選手です。言葉の引き出しを沢山持っている方です。

Monthly Puroresu: Is there anyone in pro wrestling you’d like to work with? Either as an opponent, or a tag-team partner?

Tsukushi: I’d like another match with Nanae Takahashi, the athlete who really inspired me to become a professional wrestler.

Monthly Puroresu: プロレス界で一緒に仕事をしたいと強く思っている人はいますか？対戦相手として、あるいはタッグパートナーとして

Tsukushi: プロレスラーになるきっかけとなった選手、高橋奈七永選手ともう一度対戦がしたいです。

Monthly Puroresu: What did you appreciate learning the most while touring as a professional wrestler?

Tsukushi: Everything I’ve experienced in my 12 years here at Ice Ribbon has been a learning experience, preparing me for the next stage of my career. There are so many things I’ve learned since becoming a professional wrestler. Before my debut, I was not too great at communicating my feelings. Since becoming a Joshi wrestler, I’ve been more able to express my feelings – both through my matches, and in words.

Monthly Puroresu:  プロレスラーとして巡業する中で、一番勉強になったことは何ですか？

Tsukushi:このアイスリボンで12年間経験した事が全て勉強になり、次へのステージの為になってます。プロレスラーになり、教わった事は沢山あるのですが デビューする前までは、自分の気持ちを伝える事が苦手でした。プロレスラーになってから、自分の気持ちを試合を通してだったり、言葉にして伝えられるようになりました。

Monthly Puroresu: In America we have a saying: “Never say never,” do you consider this a truly final decision — or what is something that might bring you back into the ring?

Tsukushi: Even if I’m retiring, I still can’t fully grasp how much I love wrestling. As a wrestler, I will never return. As Tsukushi Haruka, just an ordinary person, I’d like to watch Ice Ribbon matches along with all the fans watching at home. So, there’s still a chance I can meet everyone in Ice Ribbon – and the fans who love Ice Ribbon!

Monthly Puroresu: アメリカにはこんな言葉があります。「これは本当に最後の決断なのでしょうか。それとも、またリングに戻ってくるようなことがあるのでしょうか？
Tsukushi: 私は、引退してもプロレスが大好きな気持ちは分かりません。レスラーとしては、戻ることは無いですが 一般人春輝つくしとして、アイスリボンの試合を観戦したいと思っています。なので、アイスリボンの皆にも、アイスリボンを大好きでいてくれるファンの方にも会えると思います。
