Puroresu Gate, Weekly Ticket Sales – WrestleKingdom Week Special

Puroresu Gate: 9th Of January 2023

By: Mitchell Adams

Welcome to Puroresu Gate, a weekly feature where we review attendance figures of Puroresu and Joshi promotions in the most well-known venues in Japan.

In this special edition of Puroresu Gate, we not only examine the ticket sales for the biggest event of the year in New Japan Pro Wrestling’s WrestleKingdom in the 55,000-seat capacity Tokyo Dome, but also events held in other venues by other promotions since WrestleKingdom week has become as big of a deal in Japan as Wrestlemania week is in North America.

Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling: TJPW 2023

Date: January 4th

Venue: Tokyo Korakuen Hall

Attendance: 1,111

Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling has been holding an annual event in the 1,800-seat Korakuen Hall on January 4th for several years now and it has become one of their biggest events of the year. This event did not disappoint with everyone involved looking to steal the show. The highlight of the evening was the Princess Of Princess Championship main event between champion Yuka Sakazaki and challenger Miyu Yamashita.

Big Japan Pro Wrestling: Death Match King Death 2023

Date: January 4th

Venue: Shin-Kiba 1st RING

Attendance: 333

Big Japan brought blood, gore, and violence to an oversold Shin-Kiba 1st RING arena on January 4th with an event not for the faint of heart. But if you are a fan of the Deathmatch style of Puroresu you will greatly enjoy this event highlighted by a Fluorescent Light tubes Death Match for the BJW Deathmatch Heavyweight Championship between Hideyoshi Kamitani and Ryuji Ito.

World Wonder Ring Stardom: Triangle Derby 1

Date: January 6th

Venue: Tokyo Korakuen Hall

Attendance: 821

World Wonder Ring Stardom decided to start 2023 with a bang announcing this new and unique tournament. The first event in the tournament saw several wonderful matches highlighted by Syuri, MIRAI, and Ami Sohrei going up against Mina Shirakawa, Xia Brookside, and Mariah May.

New Japan Pro Wrestling: WrestleKingdom 17

Date: January 4th

Venue: Tokyo Dome

Attendance: 26,085

With the global pandemic severely limiting attendance and crowd participation for WrestleKingdom 15 and 16, words can’t describe just how thrilled everyone at MP was to see all restrictions lifted for this event so a large crowd of fans could cheer and boo to their heart’s content. We can only imagine how good it must have felt for every wrestler on the card as well. This event was STACKED from top to bottom from the first IWGP Women’s Championship defense between KAIRI and Tam Nakano which was followed by the debut of Mercedes Mone’ (FKA WWE’s Sasha Banks) to the co-main events of Kenny Omega vs. Will Ospreay for the IWGP U.S. Championship and Jay White vs. Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. Do yourself a favor and give this event repeat viewings on NJPW World!
