The quarterfinals of the New Japan Cup kicked off on March 15th when NJPW brought the action to Yamanashi. There were 2 quarterfinal matches on the card with Boltin Oleg and Yuya Uemura picking up victories to advance to the semifinals.
A battle between Openweight Champions took place in the semi-main event, with STRONG Openweight Champion Boltin Oleg taking on NEVER Openweight Champion Ren Narita to see which champion would be advancing to the next round of the tournament.
As to be expected, House of Torture interfered in the match, attempting to steal yet another victory away from a member of Hontai. House of Torture’s heelish ways were ultimately shut down by Aaron Wolf and Toru Yano, who came to the aid of Oleg in an attempt to even the odds.
At around the 12 minute mark, Oleg turned Narita’s Hell’s Gullitone off the top rope into one of his signature moves, the Verdict. Oleg was then able to put away the House of Torture member with his Kamikaze finisher for the win.
In the main event of the evening, Yuya Uemura defeated Shingo Takagi for the first time in his career to advance to the semifinals. After 26 minutes of hard hitting action, Uemura and Takagi exchanged close range headbutts before Uemura was able to hit his Deadbolt Suplex for the victory.
Uemura shared his thoughts on his win during his post-match interview stating:
“I’ve finally surpassed Takagi—well, I don’t think I’ve surpassed him yet, but since I finally beat him in the same ring today, just as Takagi said at the end of the match, I’m going to the finals! And I’m going to get even stronger! And I’m going to stand right at the very center of New Japan Pro Wrestling!”
