Zack Sabre Jr.’s NJPW World TV Championship Reign Becomes Historic

By: James Carlin

Today at Day 1 of the Road to Destruction tour, Zack Sabre Jr. completed an interesting and historic feat as he defended his NJPW World TV Championship against Oleg Boltin.

Zack Sabre Jr.’s successful defence marks his thirteenth, and in doing so has had the most defences of any champion in New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s history since the establishment of the International Wrestling Grand Prix governing body in 1983. The record before this was held by Kazuchika Okada, whose 720-day reign with the IWGP Heavyweight Championship reached twelve defences from Dominion 6.19 in 2016 to Dominion 6.9 in 2018, where he was dethroned by Kenny Omega.

Prior to the IWGP, Antonio Inoki held the record for most defences at 30 when he was NWF Heavyweight Champion between 1975-1980, when he was ultimately defeated by Stan Hansen.
