Taiji Ishimori & Robbie X Claim Early Lead at NJPW Super Jr Tag League Day 2

By: Noah Leatherland

NJPW were back in Korakuen Hall for the first of back-to-back days in the Super Jr. Tag League. While the race is still tight in just the second day of competition, Unbound Co. have stuck there noses out in front in A Block.

Ishimori and X came up against House of Torture’s DOUKI and Yoshinobu Kanemaru, with both teams starting the day on 2 points. As such, it was a big opportunity for either team to establish themselves as early block leaders. DOUKI and Kanemaru launched an early, underhanded attack to being the match and then focused on Ishimori’s ankle for much of the bout. However, Ishimori would end up mimicking some House of Torture tendencies. With the referee distracted, Ishimori low-blowed Kanemaru and rolled him up into a pin to secure the win.

In the post-match comments, Ishimori was confident that he and X will move up to 6 points in the next match:

That makes it two wins in a row… Having Robbie as my partner today was a real boost. Next up is Mistico & Yasuda tomorrow. Well, it looks like it’ll be an interesting tag team match, but there’s no way Yasuda’s going to beat us—that kind of upset isn’t going to happen. We’re going to secure our third straight win and show everyone the result they should expect.

Over in B Block, two teams pushed themselves out in front, rising to the total of 4 points. First, the United Empire combo of Francesco Akira and Jakob Austin Young took the lead. They faced Titan and Daiki Nagai, with Akira landing the Fireball on Nagai to pick up the pinfall victory. In the post-match comments, Akira took the opportunity to address the situation within United Empire:

Maybe I was a bit too upset last night, alright? But after Ryogoku Hall, how could I not be? How could I not be when I am overseas in America and my loyalty to this team gets questioned? How am I supposed to be? I’ve been giving this team a hundred percent since the day I joined. I’ve been beaten up with chairs, ladders, tables, caskets, you name it. I’ve been stabbed with forks. I’ve been in a cage with animals for one hour that I didn’t want to be, just to protect the United Empire.

And while I’m overseas in America, where the best wrestle, my loyalty to this group gets question by Callum. And guess who turns up today, watching the show from the balcony? Callum, you, right? There are supposed to be no sides in this team. There’s supposed to be no sides, right? But something is definitely not working. But I have to look at the bigger picture. I have to watch this tournament because this is my only ticket into Tokyo Dome, probably… Even if I don’t agree which side he stands on, I’ll have to make it work, just for the bigger picture.

Then, in the main event of the evening, Robbie Eagles and Kosei Fujita picked up a win over AEW’s The Swirl. After battling for over 20 minutes, the Ichiban Sweet Boys connected with the Interceptor on Lee Johnson to set up the pin. Speaking in the post-match comments, Eagles brought up the possibility of a rematch across the other side of the Pacific:

Blake Christian, Lee Johnson, congratulations on a hard-fought loss. But, but, any other day and maybe you would’ve taken the victory. And hey, year after bloody year, that forbidden door stays closed for me, even though I make random appearances on your side. So, you seemed like you wanted another shot at the Ichiban Sweet Boys. On your turf, maybe? AEW’s ring, maybe? Year after year, the fans across the world want TMDK, they want the Ichiban Sweet Boys there. So you tell your boss Tony to get on the phone, book the flights and make it happen, because I an Kosei Fujita will be waiting.
