Q&A w/ Riko Kawahata on Marvelous, Magenta, Miku Aono, Life + More!

By: Pep S. Caro

Marvelous Pro Wrestling is a company that inherited the legacy of the hard hitting Japanese wrestling style from the 1980s All Japan Women’s Pro Wrestling and the 1990s and 2000s GAEA. The promotion, founded by CRUSH GALS member Chigusa Nagayo and one of the most influential wrestlers of her generation, is enjoying a great moment as it begins its tenth anniversary activities.

The atmosphere in Marvelous and women’s wrestling has become more lively in Japan with the roster members winning championships and having exciting performances. Before the beginning of the Winter, I was able to talk with Riko Kawahata, member of Magenta, in what was her first interview with any international media outlet after losing the Marigold Twin Star Championship. Riko was very kind (?) to answer all the questions that covered a variety of topics. Of course, she answered in the way that only Riko can do it.

Monthly Puroresu: The last time we were able to chat was weeks before Magenta made a complete change and won the Marigold Twin Star Championships, defeating Nanae Takahashi and Seri Yamaoka. What are your thoughts on that match and the former champions?

Riko Kawahata: I don’t know but I reckon it was good to show Marvelous wrestler’s strengths to Marigold wrestlers.

Monthly Puroresu: At Marigold Shine Forever, Marvelous lost in a 5-on-5 elimination match. What are your thoughts on this match?

Riko Kawahata: Hmm, can’t really remember much.

Monthly Puroresu: Magenta then defeated Takako Inoue and NØRI of LLPW-X. What are your thoughts on this match?

Riko Kawahata: I enjoyed that match a lot since our organization doesn’t usually get involved with theirs.

Monthly Puroresu: Magenta successfully defended the Marigold Twin Star Championships against Mai Sakurai and Chanyota. You were victorious over Sakurai. What are your thoughts on this match?

Riko Kawahata: Well, I suppose it was good they spoke up when no challengers were coming forward.

They fought against Magenta. So, they must have made us enjoy in the ring more. But they didn’t.

Monthly Puroresu: You also unsuccessfully challenged Sakurai to a match for Marigold the United National Championship. After the match, you cut off part of your hair in the ring and gave it to Sakurai. Was cutting your hair there a sign of your determination to win the belt?

Riko Kawahata: Well, Sakurai kept asking me to bet something if I lose the match. So, what I could have bet was my hair. So, I cut it off. That’s it.

Monthly Puroresu: Magenta adopted Johnnie Robbie during part of Johnnie’s tour in Japan and in recent months have been teaming with Chikayo Nagashima. Why did you decide to include them as part of the “Party Gang”?

Riko Kawahata: Magenta is living freely. It’s really up to Johnnie and Chikayo san whether they want to team up or not. We just do what we think it’s fun!

Monthly Puroresu: At Marvelous, Magenta racked up several victories during the spring and summer. Do you think the time is right to face SPARK RUSH for the AAAW belts? What are your impressions of Takumi Iroha and Sareee as competitors?

Riko Kawahata: The AAAW Tag belts are Magenta’s first championship belts. They are packed with all sorts of feelings, and we’re the ones who suit them best, right??

Honestly, I believe that it’s better and more fun if we hold the belts rather than Spark Rush. Rather than two strong wrestlers teaming up and just showing off their strengths all over the place holding those titles.

Monthly Puroresu: In August, Marvelous lost another 5-on-5 elimination match against Marigold. Here you were able to interact with Miku Aono again. What are your thoughts on this match?

Riko Kawahata: Apart from Miku Aono, I’m not really that interested in anyone else from there.

Monthly Puroresu: Unfortunately, we haven’t seen a new singles match between you and Miku yet. Is this match still something you’d like to see happen? Would you prefer it happen in the MARVELOUS ring or the MARIGOLD ring?

Riko Kawahata: If I can have a single match with Miku Aono, it can be at Marvelous Pro wrestling or at Marigold. I don’t mind which wrestling organization hold the event. I only care about the match.

Monthly Puroresu: Magenta competed in Friday Night Gacha, defeating Hibiscus Mii and Kyusei Ninja Ranmaru. What are your thoughts on this match? What do you think of the opponents?

Riko Kawahata: The President of “Kin Gacha” (Chigusa Nagayo) never gives me any offers! The match was fun, but those two were just too strong in every sense, so no thank you (to returning to Kin Gacha).

Monthly Puroresu: However, we haven’t seen Magenta compete in MONDAY MAGIC yet. Are you interested in competing in that other Wrestle UNIVERSE show?

Riko Kawahata: Magenta is surprisingly popular on Wrestle Universe! lol. We want to appear more. NOSAWA RONGAI san, we are waiting for offers for Magenta!

Monthly Puroresu: We’ve seen you’ve participated in many high-level matches with opponents from all over the world. If you could choose to face one opponent that you haven’t face yet, who would you like to face?

Riko Kawahata: I want to have a singles match with Chihiro Hashimoto.

I want to fight against Hazuki and Koguma (FWC (Fukuoka Double Crazy)) in a tag match.

Monthly Puroresu: On October 26, Magenta lost the Twin Star Championships against Misa Matsui and CHIAKI at Marigold Grand Destiny 2025. What do you think of the members of Darkness Revolution?

Riko Kawahata: I’m not particularly interested in the members, but… I was Matsui’s former tag partner, so I wonder if we could do something interesting together? Or maybe not?

Monthly Puroresu: Over the summer, Takumi Iroha traveled to Spain to represent Marvelous and Pro Wrestling NOAH in a match for the RCW Women’s World Championship and the GHC Title. Are there any countries you’d like to visit and represent Marvelous?

Riko Kawahata: I’d like to wrestle in countries where pro wrestling isn’t big and show them how great it is.

Monthly Puroresu: We’d like to know a little more about Riko. Could you tell us about your hobbies and the things you like? What’s a typical day in your life like?

Riko Kawahata: I normally sleep till noon and chill. Then, I start doing something in the evening.

Monthly Puroresu: Thank you so much for participating in this interview. Finally, do you have any message for your fans and Magenta’s fans around the world?

Riko Kawahata: I want to hold a Marvelous event at the Tokyo Dome. I have no clue how long it’ll take, but just shut up and follow me.
