Ones To Watch, 08.04.22 – Anthony Greene

By: Richard Edwards

Anthony Greene has blossomed into a fierce, experienced, and skillful competitor and one to watch on NOAH’s current slate of cards.  A little backstory on Greene: He developed his passion for wrestling as a kid  from small town Randolph, Massachusetts, and has been in the game since 2012. Greene has had a handful of matches on AEW Dark, but is mostly known in wrestling circles as a referee turned wrestler – quite the story. His passion was reportedly cemented while watching the first season of Tough Enough and being introduced to Maven Huffman, the winner of that competition.

In NOAH, he was announced this summer as a roster addition alongside fellow expat Stallion Rogers, and has even made a guest commentary appearance. His flashy move set comes from both his time in the WWE, and a long tour of the independent circuit.

Stint with WWE

Anthony Greene signed a developmental contract with WWE in August 2020, giving him an opportunity with the world’s most well-known and lucrative wrestling promotion. He changed his name to “August Grey,” making his WWE debut at the 205 live event on October 16, 2020. He fought in several matches in WWE, but didn’t manage to secure any victories; subsequently, WWE released him on June 26, 2021.  He confidently returned to the indie scene in August 2021, just a little over a month after leaving WWE, as Japan began relaxing work visa restrictions for foreign talents.

Shortly after leaving WWE, Greene was booked in one of his former promotions, Limitless Wrestling getting the biggest ovation of his career in a comeback versus fellow rising star Daniel Garcia. Greene noted on the independents you have more freedom and control over your actions, and seemed to relish the road ahead, just before NOAH’s major announcement to bring him onto their tours.

On the Indies

Greene actually started as a full-time referee – before transitioning to wrestling. He took that plunge in 2012 at just 18, working Northeast Championship Wrestling (NCW) under the tutelage of Spike Dudley. The promotion thought highly of him, naming Greene NCW Rookie of the year in 2012, and giving him a launchpad. He got his first career victory as a professional wrestler in 2014 with Top Rope Promotions (TRP), partnering with Mikey Webb in a tag-team match. Greene also won the NCW Tag Team Championship with Mike Paiva and the Power League Wrestling World Tag Team Championship with Rob Araujo in 2014 as he continued quietly making a name for himself on the independent circuit.

Greene copped his first individual victory in 2017 while working with Lucky Pro Wrestling Promotion (LPW). He won individual championships with Chaotic Wrestling (CW) between 2018 and 2019 – he was a one-time Heavy Weight Champion and New England Champion. Additionally, Greene won the CW Tag Team Championship, making him a CW Triple Crown Champion. Greene, by now, had worked with over eight independent promotions and won multiple titles, which compelled World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) to take a look at him.

Look out NOAH!
Greene has joined an expanding NOAH roster, which includes fellow gaijins Chris Ridgeway, Ninja Mack, René Duprée, “Mr. Monday Night” Rob Van Dam, Simon Gotch and Timothy Thatcher. It’s an eclectic mix of foreigners shaking things up as a transition of power is underway in the promotion, led by GHC Heavyweight Champion Kenoh (Read what he has to say in the upcoming Monthly Puroresu magazine, Issue 9).

With some impressive performances already in NOAH, we like AG’s chances to create some staying power and even challenge for the GHC Jr. Heavyweight Title in due time. Especially considering current champ HAYATA appears to have out of legitimate challengers he hasn’t put down, and sent away.
