Shota Umino Upsets At The NJPW G1 Climax 35 Against Zack Sabre Jr.

By: Pep S. Caro

NJPW kicked off a new edition of G1 Climax, a tournament considered one of the most important in professional wrestling. The 35th edition continued on July 23, 2025, with a nine-match card in Nagaoka. The main event featured a singles match between Zack Sabre Jr. and Shota Umino, a rematch from the most recent main event at Wrestle Kingdom 19.

  1. Oleg Boltin & Toru Yano defeated House Of Torture (SANADA & Yoshinobu Kanemaru)
  2. United Empire (Callum Newman & Jakob Austin Young) defeated Shoma Kato & Yuya Uemura
  3. House Of Torture (Dick Togo & EVIL) defeated Masatora Yasuda & Taichi
  4. TMDK (Hartley Jackson & Ryohei Oiwa) defeated Daiki Nagai & Yota Tsuji
  5. Hiroshi Tanahashi & Katsuya Murashima defeated BULLET CLUB War Dogs (David Finlay & Gedo)
  6. G1 Climax 2025 Block B: YOSHI-HASHI [6] defeated Drilla Moloney [4]
  7. G1 Climax 2025 Block B: Ren Narita [4] defeated El Phantasmo [2]
  8. G1 Climax 2025 Block B: Konosuke Takeshita [4] defeated Great-O-Khan [2]
  9. G1 Climax 2025 Block B: Shota Umino [4] defeated Zack Sabre Jr. [2]

In the first match, Boltin and Yano defeated HoT. A quick bout in which the NEVER Openweight Champion of NJPW imposed conditions prior to his match with SANADA.

In the second match, United Empire defeated Uemura and Kato. Newman is beginning to gain momentum after losing two key matches in the G1. Uemura has also lost two important matches. This next singles match could determine which of them is out of the tournament in the long run, given the matches they will have in the second half of the schedule.

In the third match, HoT defeated Taichi and Yasuda. EVIL was more resourceful than Taichi and allowed HoT to take the victory in the previous match. However, Taichi has two consecutive important victories. If Taichi can prevent or deal with HoT’s numerical advantage, he could be closer to advancing to the next round of the G1.

In the fourth match, TMDK defeated Tsuji and Nagai. Oiwa begins to gain momentum with two important victories. Tsuji lost to EVIL but prevailed in arguably the toughest match of the Block against Uemura. Another generational match with high expectations, and a victory is needed by both to strengthen their chances of advancing to the next round of the G1.

In the fifth match, Tanahashi and Murashima defeated War Dogs. It was a fast-paced and entertaining bout. Tanahashi, accompanied by Murashima, managed to prevail against Finlay and Gedo. However, Finlay needs to recover after losing two important matches. Tanahashi is having good matches so far, but it’s a question mark as to how much longer his knees will hold up under the tremendous pace of competition.

In the sixth match, YOSHI-HASHI defeated Moloney. It was a good match that decided the temporary leadership of the B Block at G1 Climax 35. YOSHI-HASHI is more than demonstrating why he deserved to return to the tournament. Moloney has also been a welcome addition not only to the tournament but also to the New Japan Heavyweight division. With Hirooki Goto out of the tournament, it seems that YOSHI-HASHI has chosen as his main mission to represent Bishamon with everything he has. He has three consecutive wins, including tiebreaks over Shingo Takagi and Ren Narita. The “Head Hunter” is going strong.

In the seventh match, Narita defeated El Phantasmo. It was a fast-paced match in which Narita resorted to trickery, but it’s refreshing to see him have more freedom to wrestle. ELP achieved the most important victory against Takeshita but has struggled to prevail over other opponents. Narita has only lost to YOSHI-HASHI, so he could be one of the surprises in the next round of the G1 if he doesn’t lose his momentum.

In the eighth match, Takeshita defeated O-Khan. A good match. Takeshita has been a great success for NJPW. He empowers everyone he faces, regardless of the opponent. O-Khan looked very good, and along with the match with Takagi, these were his best individual performances so far in 2025. Takeshita took the victory with Ragging Fire and reached 4 points. Undoubtedly the big favorite in B Block.

In the ninth, Umino defeated Sabre Jr. A very good match and the best of the day. At the same time, it was Umino’s best individual match in a long time. Sabre Jr. had partial dominance, as he did with Narita, but he struggled to close the match. The final sequence was similar to Umino’s loss to Moloney, but this time Umino was able to reverse the Zack Driver and execute the Second Chapter.

The G1 Climax 35 action continues in Ota City again on July 25, with the main event featuring a bout between Hiroshi Tanahashi and David Finlay. Both men’s chances of remaining in contention for the next round depend on this bout.
