Taichi Heats The Crowd Of Sapporo In The Day 2 Of The NJPW G1 Climax 35

By: Pep S. Caro

NJPW kicked off G1 Climax 35, a new edition of the G1 tournament, considered one of the most important in professional wrestling. The second day took place in Sapporo on July 20, 2025, with a card consisting of nine matches, all valid for the tournament. The main event consisted of a singles match between Taichi and Yuya Uemura, after the original match was canceled.

  1. G1 Climax 2025 Block A: Callum Newman [2] defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi [2]
  2. G1 Climax 2025 Block B: Drilla Moloney [4] defeated Shota Umino [2]
  3. G1 Climax 2025 Block A: Oleg Boltin [2] defeated Ryohei Oiwa [2]
  4. G1 Climax 2025 Block B: YOSHI-HASHI [4] defeated Ren Narita [2]
  5. G1 Climax 2025 Block A: David Finlay [2] defeated SANADA [0]
  6. G1 Climax 2025 Block B: Great-O-Khan [2] defeated Shingo Takagi [0]
  7. G1 Climax 2025 Block A: EVIL [4] defeated Yota Tsuji [2]
  8. G1 Climax 2025 Block B: El Phantasmo [2] defeated Konosuke Takeshita [2]
  9. G1 Climax 2025 Block A: Taichi [2] defeated Yuya Uemura [2]

The show started in an unusual way with the surprise appearance of Gabe Kidd. The IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion announced that he will not compete today because he hyperextended his knee during the match with Takeshita. He has not withdrawn from the tournament and promised that he will evaluate his situation day by day. As soon as he is cleared, he will compete, so the Kidd factor will continue to be a factor until the end of G1. Let’s just hope he doesn’t force a rushed return if he’s not 100% fit and his physical integrity isn’t at risk.

In the first match, Newman defeated Tanahashi. The “Prince of Pace” won after a Brainbuster at the 7-minute mark. Just as he had in the past with Tetsuya Naito, Newman perfectly understands how to fight opponents who aren’t at 100%  on physical condition. Tanahashi looked good because of this.

In the second match, Moloney defeated Umino. It was a good, even match. Moloney was in great shape, and Umino complemented him well. At the 12-minute mark, Moloney took the win after reversing a Second Chapter into a Drilla Killa. Moloney reached 4 points and maintained his perfect score to lead Block B of the tournament.

In the third match, Boltin defeated Oiwa. A good match between the two. It was a high-speed tank collision. The intensity didn’t drop for a second. Shortly before the 10-minute mark, Boltin reversed a THE GRIP Lariat into a Kamikaze to take the win.

In the fourth match, YOSHI-HASHI defeated Narita. Narita tried to surprise the Bishamon member and almost succeeded, but the “Head Hunter” was ultimately smarter, and when Narita went for a low blow, he stopped it and performed a Cradle to take the victory in less than 2 minutes. YOSHI-HASHI reached 4 points and maintained his perfect score to lead Block B of the tournament alongside Moloney.

In the fifth match, Finlay defeated SANADA. An entertaining match in which Finlay was able to get his revenge on SANADA for betraying Bullet Club War Dogs to join the House of Torture. SANADA is making the most of his new gimmick. Finlay earned his first 2 points, while SANADA remains at the bottom of the standings.

In the sixth match, O-Khan defeated Takagi. It was a fairly even match. Surprisingly, in terms of the build-up, but Takagi’s losing streak continues. O-Khan survived the Last of the Dragon and defeated Takagi after a Dominator. O-Khan earned his first two points, while Takagi remains at the bottom of the standings.

In the seventh match, EVIL defeated Tsuji. Just like in the first match, EVIL took advantage of the numerical advantage and even had a spot with Fale trying to prevent Tsuji’s return in time for a countout loss. EVIL ultimately resorted to the BFT to take the victory and lead Block A. Second consecutive match that he wins without the Everything Is EVIL. Tsuji remains with two points, but with EVIL’s tiebreak in his favor.

In the eighth match, El Phantasmo defeated Takeshita. It was a very entertaining and evenly matched bout. Takeshita showed the damage of his match with Kidd the previous day, and ELP was able to recover after losing to Umino. The two have great chemistry. ELP secured the victory after a CR2 and a CR3. This was ELP’s first win over Takeshita, after drawing once and losing every other time. Both sides have two points on the table. But ELP has a key tiebreaker in his Block.

In the main event, which featured special English commentary by IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Zack Sabre Jr., Taichi defeated Uemura. The match was a very good one. Quite entertaining and evenly matched, just like the previous one. The crowd was hooked on the action even before the bell rang. Uemura managed to land the DeadBolt but couldn’t pin Taichi due to the damage he had accumulated during the match. Taichi received massive support, as expected. Near the 20-minute mark, Taichi hit the Black Mephisto to take the win. After the match, Sabre Jr. and Taichi chatted briefly. The Champion posed with his Championship and they shook hands in a sign of respect, recalling the great friendship they have maintained over the years as former NJPW Tag Team Champions. This is a potential title match we could see after the tournament.

The G1 Climax 35 action continues in Sendai on July 22. Confirmed matches for the tournament at the event:

  1. Yuya Uemura vs. Yota Tsuji
  2. Taichi vs. David Finlay
  3. Callum Newman vs. Ryohei Oiwa
  4. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Oleg Boltin
  5. EVIL vs. SANADA
