Hiroshi Tanahashi Aces Opening Night Of The NJPW G1 Climax 35

By: Pep S. Caro

NJPW kicked off the G1 Climax 35, a new edition of the G1, considered one of the the most important tournaments in professional wrestling. The 35th edition began in Sapporo on July 19, 2025, with a card consisting of 10 matches, all valid for the tournament. The main event featured a singles match between Taichi and Hiroshi Tanahashi. Most likely it will be their final singles bout as Tanahashi is set to retire in Wrestle Kingdom 20 on January 4 in the Tokyo Dome.

  1. G1 Climax 2025 Block B: YOSHI-HASHI [2] defeated Shingo Takagi [0]
  2. G1 Climax 2025 Block A: EVIL [2] (w/ Dick Togo and Don Fale) defeated Callum Newman [0]
  3. G1 Climax 2025 Block B: Drilla Moloney [2] defeated Great-O-Khan [0]
  4. G1 Climax 2025 Block A: Yuya Uemura [2] defeated Oleg Boltin [0]
  5. G1 Climax 2025 Block B: Shota Umino [2] defeated El Phantasmo [0] (w/ Jado)
  6. G1 Climax 2025 Block A: Ryohei Oiwa [2] defeated David Finlay [0] (w/ Gedo)
  7. G1 Climax 2025 Block B: Konosuke Takeshita [2] (w/ Rocky Romero) defeated Gabe Kidd [0]
  8. G1 Climax 2025 Block A: Yota Tsuji [2] (w/ Daiki Nagai) defeated SANADA [0]
  9. G1 Climax 2025 Block B: Ren Narita [2] defeated Zack Sabre Jr. [0]
  10. G1 Climax 2025 Block A: Hiroshi Tanahashi [2] defeated Taichi [0]

In the first match, YOSHI-HASHI shocked the crowd by defeating Takagi with a Crucifix in less than 5 minutes. Takagi was unable to break his slump, now a wrestler disaffiliated without a faction in NJPW.

In the second match, EVIL took advantage of the numerical advantage to defeat Newman and focused primarily on attacking the surgically repaired knee of the United Empire “leader.” In less than 10 minutes, Newman had to strategically submit after falling victim to EVIL’s Darkness Scorpion to avoid further harming his chances of advancing to the next round.

In the third match, Moloney defeated O-Khan. Another quick match in which, despite the evenly matched performance, Moloney managed to prevail after a GORE followed by a Drilla Killa. It was a good G1 debut for the Bullet Club War Dogs member.

In the fourth match, Uemura defeated Boltin. A good match and the first to pass the 10-minute mark. Another very evenly matched match. Boltin has gained confidence after defeating Takeshita and Yuji Nagata. Uemura has regained the form he had before his injury in the G1 last year.

In the fifth match, Umino defeated El Phantasmo. Another match lasting over 10 minutes. Very even. But once again, Umino resorted to the same old formula. He won with the Second Chapter. Both wrestlers greeted each other post-match as a sign of respect and to confirm that despite the result, all is well between them.

In the sixth match, Oiwa defeated Finlay. It was a good match, and it was the first to surpass the 13-minute mark. Very even. Oiwa showed off his Pro Wrestling NOAH arsenal during his training with Yoshinari Ogawa. Finlay is in peak physical condition, but despite executing his best holds, he couldn’t defeat Oiwa. The TMDK member took the victory after executing THE GRIP Lariat on the Bullet Club War Dogs leader. Another good G1 debut.

In the seventh match, Takeshita defeated Kidd. It was a good match, and it also surpassed the 13-minute mark. It was a flurry of strikes. A very even match in which Takeshita surprisingly won by referee decision after knocking out Kidd during a sleeper on the ring apron. After the match, Kidd woke up and challenged the referee’s decision and attacked Takeshita. We’ll likely see a rematch after the tournament, and with a longer duration.

In the eighth match, Tsuji defeated Sanada. It was a fast-paced but entertaining bout. It lasted just over five minutes, but it gave them plenty of room to play. Tsuji took the win after surprising Sanada with a Gene Blast.

In the ninth match, Narita defeated Sabre Jr. The match lasted over 15 minutes. It was a good match in which Narita showcased most of his arsenal and only resorted to cheating in the finale. Sabre Jr. reminisced about his time in Suzuki-Gun, belittling Narita. In the end, the House of Torture member defeated the TMDK leader with a combo that included a low blow, a Bloody Cross, and a Guillotine of Hell.

In the main event, with a very engaged crowd, Tanahashi defeated Taichi. It was a good match in which both veterans performed at their best. It was the longest match at 20 minutes. There were moments when both could have won, but it was “The Ace” who prevailed after a High Fly Attack followed by a High Fly Flow. The question here is whether Tanahashi can compete at this level throughout the tournament with the state of his knees. The first day was exciting and excited its fans.

The G1 Climax 35 action continues in Sapporo again on July 20, with the main event featuring a match between Zack Sabre Jr. and Gabe Kidd. Both British wrestlers are NJPW’s top singles champions and started by losing the first match, so whoever loses here will be closer to elimination from the tournament.
