The New Japan Cup 2024 brackets have been revealed! TJP moves to the Heavyweight division, and Jack Perry debuts!

By: R. Faliani

After New Beginning in Sapporo, the New Japan Cup 2024 brackets were revealed today, and as New Japan Pro Wrestling enters a new era, so does the cup, with new entries and defining performances to be had for wrestlers that are moving up in the ranks. The IWGP World Champion Tetsuya Naito awaits his new challenger for Sakura Genesis, and he has had bad luck with New Japan Cup winners in the past, such as EVIL. Who will be the winner this year? How are the brackets loaded? Let’s see!

This year, the New Japan Cup has two brackets loaded with familiar faces, but also debuts on this prestigious occasion. The attention of the NJPW faithful falls on the “Reiwa Three Musketeers” Shota Umino, Ren Narita, and Yota Tsuji. With Kazuchika Okada and Will Ospreay’s departure, NJPW needs a top star sooner rather than later, and this cup is the perfect chance for the three to impose themselves and take the brass ring. As of now, the brackets are:

FIRST BRACKET

  • SANADA faces the winner of YOSHI-HASHI vs. KENTA
  • YOSHI-HASHI vs. KENTA
  • Shota Umino vs. Jack Perry (AEW Debut)
  • Toru Yano vs. Yujiro Takahashi
  • TJP (Moves to Heavyweight, debut) vs. David Finlay
  • Tanga Loa vs. Great O’Khan
  • Tomohiro Ishii vs. Chase Owens
  • Hirooki Goto faces the winner of Tomohiro Ishii vs. Chase Owens

SECOND BRACKET

  • EVIL faces the winner of Hikuleo vs. Boltin Oleg
  • Hikuleo vs. Boltin Oleg (Debut)
  • Shingo Takagi vs. Yuya Uemura
  • Callum Newman (Debut) vs. Gabe Kidd
  • Yota Tsuji vs. Jeff Cobb
  • El Phantasmo vs. Mikey Nicholls
  • Taichi vs. Ren Narita
  • Zack Sabre Jr. faces the winner of Taichi vs. Ren Narita

The brackets this year are surely loaded, but as the experience of past New Japan Cups have shown, names do not equal success. The last winner of the New Japan Cup was unexpected and started a path in SANADA’s career that made him bigger than ever. This year, we will have different and exciting matchups between the future of New Japan as a whole. We have wrestlers like Newman and Kidd, who are positioning themselves lately as part of the future of the company. Then, we have the likes of Oleg and Perry debuting in the cup and trying to make a name for themselves.

As part of the Ota Bracket, starting on March 6, we will have YOSHI-HASHI vs. KENTA, Shota Umino vs. Jack Perry, and Toru Yano vs. Yujiro Takahashi.

For the Korakuen bracket, starting on March 7, we will have TJP vs. David Finlay, Tanga Loa vs. Great O’Khan, and Tomohiro Ishii vs. Chase Owens.

For the Yamanashi bracket, starting on March 8, we will have Hikuleo vs. Boltin Oleg, Shingo Takagi vs. Yuya Uemura, and Callum Newman vs. Gabe Kidd.

And, for the Hyogo bracket, starting on March 10, we will have Yota Tsuji vs. Jeff Cobb, El Phantasmo vs. Mikey Nicholls, and Taichi vs. Ren Narita.

Surely this year we will see a new face winning the cup, due to the importance this tournament has for the wrestlers involved and their plans in New Japan. A new era brings new faces to a new cup and all of these great wrestlers will fight to see who will stand as the new winner of the New Japan Cup.

Because it’s the *New* Japan Cup, get it?
