When Mayu Iwatani joined the Marigold roster, she indicated that her goal was to win every championship in the promotion.
On May 24th at Marigold SHINE FOREVER 2025, she accomplished her first step in achieving that goal. Iwatani defeated Victoria Yuzuki to win the Marigold Super Flyweight Title in front of 2,450 fans at a sold out Yoyogi National Stadium Gymnasium.
The match was very hard fought as Yuzuki was out to prove that she has grown as a competitor since she departed STARDOM last year to join Marigold. At one point in the match, Iwatani was bleeding from her mouth.
Iwatani was able to put Yuzuki away at just under the ten minute mark with a Moonsault Press to secure the Super Flyweight Championship.
Following the match, Iwatani had nothing but praise for Yuzuki calling her “amazing” and saying how much she has accomplished in the last year. Iwatani said she would like to work with Yuzuki as a tag team going forward.
From Mayu Iwatani:
Yuzuki, it’s only been a year and a half since you debuted, right? That’s impossible! You’re amazing! I think Yuzuki has grown a lot in the past year. But it’s amazing how much you’ve accomplished in just a year and a half. Seriously amazing. I thought it would be great to have a match today and fight you, but Mayu would like to work together with Yuzuki as a tag team from now on.”
Yuzuki held the Marigold Super Flyweight Title for 141 days and made three successful title defenses before losing it today to Iwatani.
It was interesting to hear Iwatani mention that she would like to team with Yuzuki. As the Marigold Twin Star Championship is currently held by the Marvelous duo of Riko Kawahata & Maria, one could wonder if Iwatani & Yuzuki could be the tandem to bring the titles back to Marigold. As the saying goes, only time will tell.
