Gabe Kidd is the big uncertainty at the NJPW G1 Climax 35. Kidd announced on the second night of the tournament in Sapporo on July 20 that he was injured midway through his match on the first day of the G1 against Konosuke Takeshita. He suffered from an injury on his knee, he hyperextended it, which is preventing him from competing at his full potential. Because of this, he announced he would not be able to compete on July 20, and therefore his opponent Zack Sabre Jr. was up two points. He cut an emotional promo and indicated that his situation would be evaluated each matchday. He promised not to withdraw from the tournament, as his intention is to compete as soon as he is medically cleared.

After nearly 72 hours of rest, his next match was scheduled for July 23rd in Nagaoka against Shingo Takagi. This was an important bout, as both men entered this match with 0 points. However, NJPW has confirmed that Kidd is unfit to compete and therefore forfeits due to a no-show. Takagi now has 2 points, while Kidd remains at the bottom of the standings with 0 points. NJPW also confirmed that Gabe’s situation will continue to be evaluated in the following rounds, as he is still an active wrestler in the tournament. The Gabe Kidd factor could be decisive if he can compete in the final stretch and win matches.
