Jun Kasai Says It Would Be Fun If All His Best of the Super Jr. 33 Matches Ended in Disqualification

By: Ian McCord

Deathmatch legend Jun Kasai will have his first match of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Best of the Super Jr. 33 on May 16th when he faces lucha Libre sensation Titan in Hachioji.

Ahead of Kasai’s debut in the legendary Jr. heavyweight tournament, NJPW sat down for an interview with the almost 30 year veteran to pick his brain ahead of his participation in this year’s BOSJ.

Early in the interview, Kasai was asked how he plans to handle the strict rule set that is in place for NJPW matches. The deathmatch aficionado responded simply by claiming he does what he wants and that there’s a lot of wriggle room when it comes to the referees 5 count.

From Jun Kasai:

“Honestly, I do what I want. For better or for worse, the rules are pretty loose in wrestling. A lot of wriggle room in that referee’s five count, right? That’s exciting to me. It’ll be a test of how much Jun Kasai do you get within the count of five. It’ll be NJPW matches, but within Jun Kasai’s world.”

Later in the interview, Kasai mentions that this year’s BOSJ catchphrase is “over the top excellence,” suits him perfectly since no one is more over the top than he is, and also went on to explain how he could go either way in this year’s tournament. He could try his best and win the whole thing, or lose every match by disqualification, the world is his oyster.

From Jun Kasai:

“And one thing I want to point out- the catchphrase for BOSJ this year is ‘over the top excellence’ and no one is more over the top than me. [….] I’ve got to take this one. It’s all to gain for me being in this. Honestly I think it would be fun if every single one of my league matches ended in a DQ loss. But the biggest gain for me would be to win the whole thing, so. This is a pretty cool place to be. I’m feeling inspired.”

The inspired Jun Kasai will have the chance to make an impact in this year’s Best of the Super Jr. when he faces Titan in Hachioji, streaming live on NJPW World on May 16th.
