Jeff Cobb Returns To NJPW, Attacks Callum Newman and Joins Unbound Co.

A superstar has made his return to New Japan Pro-Wrestling after being away for over a year.

At the Aug. 16th G1 Climax 36 Finals event, United Empire’s Callum Newman, HENARE & Great-O-Khan defeated the Unbound Co. trio of Yuto-Ice, OSKAR & Daiki Nagai. After the bout, Newman proceeded to attack Nagai which prompted Gedo to intervene. Gedo told Newman he had someone who could fix his attitude.

Within seconds, former United Empire member Jeff Cobb appeared and made his way down to the ring. Newman attempted to welcome Cobb back but Cobb hit Newman with a shoulder block and aligned himself with Unbound Co.

During his backstage interview, Cobb called NJPW “real wrestling” which was an obvious shot at the WWE. He also vowed to teach former ally Callum Newman a lesson.

“I’ve returned to New Japan, where I can see real wrestling. And I plan to join Unbound Co. Nothing holds me back anymore. And now, what I need to do is teach Callum a lesson, something your mom never did.” (English translation via Deepl.com)

Cobb’s last match in NJPW was back on April 19th 2025 when he faced and lost to Hiroshi Tanahashi. Cobb debuted for the WWE in May 2026 under the name JC Mateo. He was released from the WWE on May 2nd 2026 and is now back in NJPW.

Cobb held the IWGP Tag Team Championship with Newman before leaving for the WWE. In addition, Cobb has held the NJPW World Television Championship, NEVER Openweight Title and the IWGP Tag Team Championship on two other occasions.
