Jake Lee: “Takashi Sugiura Embodies Determination The Most”

By: J. Curbelo

Pro Wrestling NOAH’s GHC Heavyweight Champion Jake Lee revealed the reason why he unpromptedly challenged Takashi Sugiura to fight him for the title. “I knew I had to fight this guy”, Lee asserted.

After an exhaustive eight-man tag team match at yesterday’s Korakuen Hall show, Good Looking Guys were defeated by the team of Kaito Kiyomiya, Seiki Yoshioka, Takashi Sugiura and Atsushi Kotoge, the latter pinning YO-HEY to win the bout. However, the focus was all on current Champion Lee directing his attention towards former Heavyweight Champion Sugiura.

Being straightforward, Jake Lee simply expressed that he wants to fight Sugiura after the match. And it was all confirmed for NOAH’s Green Journey in Nagoya next June 17th as Lee’s third title defense. The champion had defended against Naomichi Marufuji, who wanted to prove that Lee did not represent NOAH at all, but ended up failing to overcome his opponent.

The leader of GLG later expressed that he did not feel enough determination from Marufuji, but that there was someone who embodied just that more than anyone else: Takashi Sugiura. Lee admired his ability to stay in shape and having been with NOAH for so long, holding the Heavyweight title four different times. He realized he had to fight him.

On his own, Sugiura confessed that he would’ve preferred it was Marufuji the champion. He was ready to challenge if that had been the result in Ryogoku, but alas, the former champion is ready for the challenge. Sugiura wants to make sure Lee doesn’t feel so confident about reigning NOAH just because he defended the title two times.
