El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. Becomes 1st Mexican GHC Heavyweight Champion

El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. is the first Mexican, and second foreigner, to win the GHC Heavyweight championship

By: Lewis Carlan

In a recent interview, El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. indicated that his dream is to win the GHC Heavyweight Title. On February 4th at Pro Wrestling NOAH’s CROSS OVER in Sendai, Wagner Jr’s dream became a reality as he defeated KENOH to win the GHC Heavyweight Championship. Over 1100 fans were on hand at the Sendai Sun Plaza Hall to witness history as Wagner Jr. became the first Mexican wrestler to win Pro Wrestling NOAH’s top prize.

This was KENOH’s third defense of the GHC Heavyweight Championship since winning it back in October 2023. Prior to the match, KENOH had proclaimed that he had to retain the title as he was the one to “lift up” NOAH. Unfortunately for KENOH, Wagner Jr. had other plans. Wagner Jr. was able to secure the championship after hitting a top rope moonsault which proved to be too much for the former champion.

Wagner Jr. had little time to celebrate before he knew who would be challenging him first for his title. Former GHC Heavyweight Champion Jake Lee made his way down to the ring and challenged Wagner Jr for his newly won championship. Pro Wrestling NOAH wasted little time in making that championship match official as it has been announced for March 31st at Korakuen Hal.

During a backstage interview following his title win, Wagner Jr. made these heartfelt comments:

β€œI was away from my family & sacrificed a lot. It was a really long road but everything paid off. From now on I will be the champion representing NOAH, Japan & the world. I’m really happy to be the 1st Mexican to win this title”

Wagner Jr. is the 44th competitor to hold the GHC Heavyweight Championship. In addition to being the first Mexican, he is only the second foreigner to hold the coveted title after TNA Wrestling star Eddie Edwards won it back in 2017.
