This year’s Goddesses of Stardom Tag League has gotten underway, kicking off in Korakuen Hall. The opening night saw plenty of teams in action, with early points being scored in both red and blue blocks.
Red Goddesses includes last year’s tournament winners, Sakurara. Fresh off losing the NEW BLOOD Tag Team Championships, Aya Sakura and Sayaka Kurara arrived in Korakuen Hall with new gear and music to kick their campaign off.
However, their new look did not help their cause. They came up against the odd couple of Saori Anou and Fuwa-chan. Anou led her side to victory, catching Kurara with the Special Pottering and scoring the pinfall. With the early 2 points, Fuwa-chan intends to keep her power level high throughout the whole tournament:
People say you get stronger through battle—like in Dragon Ball, where your power level goes up with each episode—but I have absolutely no intention of doing that this time. I’ll be in top gear and at top speed right from the start, and no matter who the Frieza is, I’ll take them down in one hit!
Meanwhile, Sakurara took the loss in their stride and swore to bounce back.
Kurara:
As someone who was aiming for an undefeated winning streak, this is quite a blow, but we’ll redouble our efforts and stay focused from here on out.
Sakura:
Since we were competing this year as the defending champions, we completely revamped everything—from our costumes to our entrance music and even our signature poses. I feel like our bond has grown stronger as we’ve worked through these decisions together, so we’re absolutely going to be fine.
Red Goddesses also saw Hanan & Waka Tsukiyama take on Kikyo Furusawa and Kiyoka Kotatsu. With the Itoh Respect Gundan having a history of arts and crafts, Furusawa brought that flair to her team with Kotatsu with matching custom jackets.
The match ended with Tsukiyama rolling up Furusawa tight for a tight pinfall. Nevertheless, Furusawa didn’t let the loss spoil her plans to win the tag league:
I really put my heart into it and had a jacket made with my name on it. I don’t feel like I lost, but it’s more like I got outmaneuvered. It’s still the first match, so I’m going to give it my all from here on out. We’re going to win!
The hotly anticipated duo of Starlight Kid and Maki Itoh, Trouble Friends, also got the Red Goddesses side of the block underway. However, Kid’s Neo Genesis teammates Mei Seira and Ema Maishima spoiled their opening match. Seira scored the pin on Itoh, gaining her side the early points. In their backstage comments, Seira and Maishima spoke on their tag team chemistry:
Maishima:
Even though [Kid]’s the leader, there’s no way we’d lose to a tag team thrown together at the last minute like that. We got off to a great start.
Seira:
We’ve still got plenty of tag team moves up our sleeves, so we’ve got this in the bag! Also, I want everyone to know what the ‘SPIRIX’ in M&E SPIRIX stands for.
Maishima:
It stands for ‘spirit’—the spirit of never giving up. SPIRIX is a combination of ‘speed’ and ‘spirit.’
The red side of the tournament was rounded out in the main event, with another clash between H.A.T.E. and STARS. Saya Kamitani and Momo Watanabe took on High Hai Mate, Maika & HANAKO. Kamitani led her team to victory, scoring the pin after hitting the Star Crusher on Maika. Addressing the crowd, the H.A.T.E. duo gave a warning to STARDOM, introducing them to Black Swan.
Kamitani:
We are Black Swan! Black Swan is going to cause a huge, thrilling stir right here in STARDOM!
Watanabe:
You’ll see. We’re strong. You bastards better look forward to seeing Black Swan win the tournament!
Over in the Blue Goddesses, Saya Iida and Utami Hayashishita got things rolling with a win over CMLL’s Dark Silueta and Valkyria. Iida crushed Valkyira with her vertical drop brainbuster to seal the victory over the luchadoras. In their post-match comments, Iida and Hayashishita delved into their deep bond.
Hayashishita:
We’ve been together since the beginning—the junior members who’ve been scolded together. There’s a bond among us junior members that others just don’t understand. After all, we’re the 10th generation—the group that doesn’t typically get things done.
Iida:
I’m not sure if that’s something we should be bragging about, though…
Hina and Lady C got out of the blocks with a win over the rookie duo of Ranna Yagami and Akira Kurogane, with Hina clutching the win after a Mad Splash on Kurogane. In their post-match comments, Yagami looked to get things together with her partner.
Yagami:
I want to work together more and practice together. But even though you ignored the list of combo moves I sent you on LINE—even though you marked it as read—you actually did one of them, didn’t you? So you really are paying attention. You want this belt, don’t you? Then let’s really go all out—let’s practice and work on our combos together.
Kurogane:
I see… That’s a real pain in the ass!
Yagami:
Akira’s a bit clumsy, so I’m going to show them how to turn things around.
Finally, the World of Stardom Champion Suzu Suzuki teamed with Rina Yamashita to defeat former tag champions, Natsuko Tora and Ruaka. Yamashita scored the points for her team, hitting Ruaka with the Splash Mountain for the win.
