While Dickinson was short on time while training and touring for New Japan STRONG and GCW, there are some nuggets you’ll likely be fascinated with.

As with every multinational corporation, CyberAgent was forced to scrap its plans during the pandemic and call an audible booking its 2020 events. It affected multiple “gaijins” booked in Japan – a list that we learned included none other than Dickinson. He was to face a legendary heavyweight in the NOAH title scene.

Monthly Puroresu: So in 2020, your WrestleMania weekend was totally messed up. You had matches with Shingo/Suzuki cancelled over Mania weekend (and you were set to wrestle Mutoh/Muta in a tag match… do you know if it was going to be him as Mutoh or Muta?
月刊プロレス：2020年、あなたのレッスルマニアの週末は完全に混乱していました。シンゴ/スズキとの試合がキャンセルされましたね(ムトウ・ムタとのタッグマッチが決まっていましたが、ムトウとして出場するのか、ムタとして出場するのかわかりますか？
Chris Dickinson: It was obviously a huge blow, but what could I do? I really felt like it was the culmination of years of hard work and grinding it out but unfortunately it didn’t happen. That’s just my luck you know? But opportunities came knocking and I rose to the occasion. I’m confident I’ll get those matches back. As far as the Muto one though, now that’s maybe one I will never get back and to make it even worse it was going to be The Great Muta. Imagine that ?! At least it was supposed to happen right? Ha!

Monthly Puroresu: Why do you love and take pride in your match with Yuji Okabayashi – and would recommend it as a match of yours to watch?
月刊プロレス：岡林裕二選手との試合を愛し、誇りに思っている理由と、自分の試合を観戦するお勧めする理由を教えてください。
Chris Dickinson: You only get one chance to make a first impression right? This was mine. Okabayashi San was the perfect opponent for me at this time and I couldn’t of been happier with my debut match in Japan against him. It was a very physical match, a lot of fire, many chops, many lariats. I knew I had to go at him like a bull. Even though I lost I built a connection with the crowd that night that only grew every night of that tour. It was a really special time for me.
クリス・ディッキンソン：第一印象を決めるチャンスは一度だけですよね？これは私のものでした。岡林さんは今の私にとって完璧な相手で、彼との日本でのデビュー戦はこれ以上ないほど満足のいくものでした。とてもフィジカルな試合で、たくさんの炎、たくさんのチョップ、たくさんのラリアットがありました。闘牛のようにぶつからなければならないと思っていました。負けてしまいましたが、その夜、観客とのつながりができ、それがツアーの度に大きくなっていきました。私にとって、本当に特別な時間でした。
Monthly Puroresu: Describe your love of Japanese wrestling – being a student of the game – and how some of your influences influence your work in the ring.
月刊プロレス：日本のプロレスが好きなこと、プロレスを勉強していること、その影響をどのように受けているのか、について教えて下さい。
Chris Dickinson: It’s been 21 years since I first got my hands on a Japanese wrestling VHS tape. I was so blown away and still am by the world of Japanese wrestling. The beauty of it is its diversity. My influences have obviously changed over the years but as you grow you take with you the wrestlers, matches, and moments that mean the most to you. It’s taken me a long time to be the wrestler I am now and I’m so fortunate to have the influences I do that made me who I am today. I still watch it everyday like I’m 14 years old! That’s how you know you truly love something.
クリス・ディッキンソン：私が初めて日本のプロレスのVHSテープを手にしてから21年が経ちました。日本のプロレスの世界にはとても驚かされましたし、今でもそうです。日本のプロレスの素晴らしさは、その多様性にあります。私が影響を受けたものは明らかに年々変化していますが、成長するにつれ、自分にとって最も意味のあるレスラー、試合、そして瞬間を手に入れることができます。今のようなレスラーになるには長い時間がかかりましたが、今の私を作った影響を受けていることはとても幸運なことです。今でも14歳の頃のように毎日見ています！それが、何かを本当に愛しているということです。
Monthly Puroresu: What’s it been like working in New Japan’s new U.S. vertical – the past several months on New Japan STRONG, and being the first ever challenger for the STRONG Openweight Title?
月刊プロレス：この数ヶ月間、新日本ストロングで活躍し、ストロングオープン級王座に初挑戦しましたが、新日本の新しいアメリカでの活動はどのようなものでしたか？
Chris Dickinson: I can’t say enough about how special my experiences have been because of Strong in and out of the ring. The nucleus of the locker room consists of amazing athletes and passionate pro wrestlers. The chemistry is always evolving there and the goal to succeed is strong. To see how the show has grown this last year and to be a part of it really does mean the world to me. Sure the no fans thing is a factor due to the circumstances but make no mistake. Anytime I hope the top rope and step foot on that blue canvas it’s all systems go. It’s a privilege anytime you get to touch an NJPW ring but competing for a new NJPW title is whole different story. There was a lot riding on that match more so than just winning. A first title defense! Let’s prove to the world this is the real deal not just another ‘trophy’ passed around like at the other places you know? This is real competition and that’s what sets us apart as a locker room and a company.
クリス・ディッキンソン：リングの中でも外でもストロングのおかげでどれだけ特別な経験ができたか、いくら言っても足りません。ロッカールームの核は、素晴らしいアスリートと情熱的なプロレスラーで構成されています。そこではケミストリーが常に進化していて、成功への目標が強いのです。この1年でショーがどのように成長したかを見て、その一部になれたことは、私にとって本当に意味のあることです。確かにファンがいないというのは状況的に仕方のないことですが、間違いありません。トップロープを飛び越えて、青いキャンバスに足を踏み入れたときには、すべてのシステムが動き出します。NJPWのリングに触れることは名誉なことですが、新しいNJPWのタイトルを争うことは全く別の話です。あの試合には、ただ勝つだけでなく、多くのことがかかっていました。初のタイトル防衛！これが本物だと世界に証明しよう他の場所のようにただの「トロフィー」を渡すのではなく、これが本当の競争であり、それがロッカールームや会社としての私たちの特徴なのです。
Monthly Puroresu: Why was getting to NJPW, specifically, a dream come true?
月刊プロレス：なぜNJPWに参加することが夢だったのでしょうか？
Chris Dickinson: It means so much, words can’t begin to describe! My intentions are to preserve professional wrestling. I am so thankful for NJPW even from a fans perspective for the fact they produce superior pro wrestling on the highest stage possible. It’s been my main goal and dream almost my entire life to wrestle in Japan. I worked very hard to accomplish that. When I was freelancing in Japan on tour in February of 2020 I knew in my heart there was only one place for me to truly prove myself and reach the highest levels of success and that is NJPW. The history, the lineage, the way they are training their young lions and preparing for the future. It’s amazing to see and even more amazing to be a small part of it.
クリス・ディッキンソン：言葉では言い表せないほどの意味があります。私の目的はプロレスを守ることです。ファンの立場から見ても、NJPWが最高の舞台で優れたプロレスを生み出していることに、とても感謝しています。日本でプロレスをすることは、私の人生における最大の目標であり、夢でもありました。 そして、それを達成するために一生懸命働きました。2020年2月のツアーで日本でフリーランスとして活動していた時、心の中では、自分自身を本当に証明し、最高レベルの成功を収めることができる場所は1つしかないと思っていましたが、それがNJPWでした。NJPWの歴史、血統、若き獅子たちのトレーニングの方法、そして未来への準備などです。それを目の当たりにして、自分がその一部であることにさらに驚きを感じています。

Monthly Puroresu: What are your hopes for the future within NJPW?
月刊プロレス：今後のNJPWに期待することはありますか？
Chris Dickinson: To wrestle in Japan regularly for NJPW and do my best to help the company grow and expand here in the United States and internationally. Everyone always says ‘I want to see you here!’ Or ‘You deserve to be signed there!’ Please understand I am right where I want to be. My heart is where it wants to be. My goal now is to continue to grow as a pro wrestler with NJPW.
