Callum Newman Takes Offense To NJPW Social Media Post, Vows To Become A Double Champion On May 4th

By: Lewis Carlan

On May 4th, the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Hirooki Goto will make his fifth title defense as he faces the challenge of United Empire’s Callum Newman at New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s Wrestling Dontaku in Fukuoka.

Newman, who is one half of the IWGP Tag Team Champions with Great-O-Khan, seemingly became upset at a recent post on X made by NJPW concerning his IWGP World Heavyweight Championship opportunity.

NJPW was advertising a May 3rd Wrestling Dontaku triple threat match between him, O-Khan & Jacob Austin Young as they will face Goto, YOSHI-HASHI & Ryusuke Taguchi. This match was referred to by NJPW as Newman’s final chance to prove himself to Goto.

This did not sit well with Newman who shot back at NJPW’s claim on X with a stern response. Newman vowed to become a double champion on May 4th when he challenges Goto for the IWGP World Heavyweight Title.

From Callum Newman:

“What do you mean one last chance I’ve already beaten him and yoshi hashi for the IWGP tag belts and I’m already a threat to his championship. I’m going to walk out of Fukuoka as a double champion.

With Jeff Cobb’s recent departure from United Empire and NJPW, Newman has stepped up and immediately filled the void left by Cobb.  Newman teamed with O-Khan on April 26th to defeat Goto & Hashi for the vacant IWGP Tag Team Title. The titles were vacated by Cobb & Newman following Cobb’s departure.

The United Empire spotlight is now shining on the 22 year old Newman and on May 4th, he has an opportunity to move to the forefront of the NJPW roster. All he needs to do is defeat Goto for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, unfortunately that is going to be a very, very difficult task to accomplish.
