World of STARDOM Champion Saya Kamitani Sets Her Sights on Breaking Iyo Sky’s Record for Most Successful Title Defenses

By: Lewis Carlan

On April 26th, the World of STARDOM champion Saya Kamitani will make her tenth defense of the Red Belt at All Star Grand Queendom 2026 as she attempts to turn back the challenge of Sayaka Kurara. A stipulation has been added to the championship bout in which if Kurara loses, her faction Cosmic Angels must disband.

While Kamitani has set a goal to be the woman who ends the Cosmic Angels faction, she has set another goal for herself in recent days. While speaking with Tokyo Sports, Kamitani revealed that she is looking to break the record for the most successful World of STARDOM title defenses which is currently held by current WWE superstar Iyo Sky at 14.

Sky, then known as Io Shirai, held the Red Belt from Dec. 23 2015 through June 21 2017 for 546 days during her incredible run as the World of STARDOM Champion. In terms of days as champion, Kamitani is closing in on Sky with, as of this writing, 480 days with the Red Belt but will need to successfully defend her title five more times if she wishes to break Sky’s record of 14 successful defense.

Kamitani currently holds the record for most defenses of the Wonder of STARDOM title at fifteen when she held the White Belt from Dec. 2021 through April 2023. Now, she is eyeing that Red Belt record and has vowed to break it.

From Saya Kamitani:

“When I first won the red belt, I said I wanted to make every title match one that would stick in the viewers’ memories, but now that I’ve come this far, breaking the record for most successful defenses is definitely on my radar. Following the White (Wonder) Championship, I’m going to break the red belt’s defense record too.”

Kamitani stated that feels that a record that is still intact after 10 years is preventing STARDOM to grow as a promotion. She also indicated that if there are records to be broken, she wants to break them all.

From Saya Kamitani:

“Io Shirai is certainly a star who’s making waves in WWE, but right now, it’s Saya who’s leading Stardom in Japan. I think the fact that a record from 10 years ago still stands is hindering future growth. The future looks brighter if the image of Stardom is synonymous with Saya, don’t you think. I take pride in having achieved what no one else in women’s pro-wrestling has managed in recent years, and I have pride in Stardom as well. If there are records to be broken, I want to break them all.”

While Kamitani is hopeful to break Iyo Sky’s World of STARDOM title defense record, she must not look past her upcoming championship bout with challenger Sayaka Kurara which is three days away. Kurara is very determined in her quest to dethroning Kamitani for the coveted Red Belt.

Kamitani’s quest to surpass Iyo Sky could come to a crashing halt on April 26th if she doesn’t take Kurara seriously by having her mind consumed with breaking the Red Belt record for most successful defenses.
