Hiroshi Tanahashi States Aaron Wolf’s Passion For Pro-Wrestling is Genuine

By: Lewis Carlan

Former Olympic judo gold medalist Aaron Wolf made his highly anticipated debut for New Japan Pro-Wrestling back on Jan. 4th at Wrestle Kingdom 20. In his first bout, he went on to defeat EVIL and win the NEVER Openweight Title.

Wolf had been highly touted by NJPW President Hiroshi Tanahashi well before his debut and the rookie, despite losing the NEVER Openweight Title, appears to be living up to all expectations. Tanahashi had stated previously that he believes Wolf could win the Tokyo Sports MVP Award in 2026.

In a new interview with Proresu-Today, Tanahashi was asked about Wolf and the vision he has for the Super Rookie’s future in NJPW. Tanahashi reiterated that he has high hopes for Wolf and that his passion for pro-wrestling is genuine.

From Hiroshi Tanahashi:

“I have incredibly high hopes for Wolf Aaron’s addition! Of course, his physical abilities are outstanding, but what’s most important is that he’s “articulate.” He’s exceptionally adept at handling variety shows, and his ability to communicate with the public is impeccable. And above all, what matters most is that his “passion” for pro-wrestling is genuine.”

When asked if Wolf has a deep love for pro-wrestling, Tanahashi answered that he does and is completely hooked on the sport.

From Hiroshi Tanahashi:

“Yes. He became completely hooked on the appeal of pro-wrestling after watching matches by top wrestlers like Okada and Naito, and he genuinely loves the sport itself. Right now, his title as “Olympic gold medalist Wolf Aaron” is taking center stage, but as time goes on, his sincere attitude toward pro-wrestling and his true character will surely resonate with the fans. Once that happens, he’ll become someone fans support even more—not because of his title, but simply as “Pro-Wrestler Wolf.” I also have high hopes for a synergistic effect: with Wolf’s immense name recognition, his interactions with existing top wrestlers will help boost the public profile of New Japan’s entire roster.”

While the odds of Aaron Wolf winning the Tokyo Sports MVP Award for 2026 are extremely low, he appears to have the complete confidence of NJPW President Hiroshi Tanahashi which should serve as a motivating factor for the “Super Rookie”.
