Mayu Iwatani had a lot to say at the press conference today as she discussed the Oct. 26th match against IYO SKY. She discussed if she could envision what the atmosphere is going to be like at Ryogoku Kokugikan at GRAND DESTINY 2025 on Oct. 26th.
From Mayu Iwatani:
“I can’t imagine it. I mean, how should I put it, for me, she was always the one who looked after me the most, both in private and in the ring. She really was like an older sister to me. I could talk to her about anything, consult her on everything, she’d even get mad at me sometimes. In the ring, we formed Thunder Rock together, and then IYO-san betrayed me. That’s when she told me to get my act together. She was the one who gave me the chance to grow. I just love her so much. I love IYO-san so much that the moment I see her, I think I’ll just go, ‘Ah, IYO-san, I’m so happy to see you!’ But then, of course, we’re opponents, so I have to keep those feelings bottled up and go in all fired up. Hmm, how should I put it? It’s just that this kind of relationship is so rare, and she’s such a special person to me. I honestly don’t know how I’ll feel until the day actually comes.”
During the course of the press conference, Iwatani stated that the only wrestler she wants to surpass is IYO SKY. She vowed to defeat SKY when the two meet at GRAND DESTINY 2025.
From Mayu Iwatani:
“First off, it’s been seven and a half years since I last fought IYO-san. I actually wasn’t told that this match was being put together beforehand; I found out when I saw it announced on X, which is how I learned myself. IYO-san competed at last year’s Ryogoku event, and I’d been thinking, ‘I hope the day comes when I can wrestle her again,’ and then I joined the company and found out that I’d be able to fight her that year. So, while there’s happiness, there’s also a pressure, a ‘Will I be okay?’ feeling, and a tension. And it’s the main event. She’s not even here, and it’s just a press conference, but I’m already nervous. I don’t even know what I should be saying. Well, it’s been seven and a half years since we last fought. But in those seven and a half years, IYO-san has changed, and I’ve changed too. I want to show that I haven’t lost anything in those areas. I’m going for the win. I’ll get the three-count from the superstar. Up until now, so many wrestlers have said they want to surpass ‘the wall that is Mayu Iwatani,’ but the only one I want to surpass is IYO-san. Just her. I will definitely defeat IYO-san, who’s like an older sister to me. Please cheer me on.”
When asked if she had anything she would like to say to her fans, Iwatani called the upcoming Marigold event the most important one for the promotion.
From Mayu Iwatani:
“The Ryogoku show will be the most important one for Marigold. And within that, this match is the main event. You don’t need any prior knowledge, background info, or prep work like reviewing past matches. Just come to the venue on the day, and let’s go with your impressions based on what you see.”
On if she had anything to say to IYO SKY, Iwatani made this comment:
“I’ll say that after the match is over. I have nothing to say right now. I’m looking forward to it. Please look forward to it, too.”
The bout between Iwatani and SKY at GRAND DESTINY 2025 is expected to be an absolute classic. This is the biggest match and most anticipated encounter thus far in the short history of Marigold.
GRAND DESTINY 2025 will be available on PPV and can be ordered through Wrestle Universe on Oct. 26th.
