Marigold’s Riara Captures DDT Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship w/ Controversial Plastic Bag Attack

By: Thom Fain

Freelancer defeats CyberFight VP Sanshiro Takagi using suffocation tactics to claim wrestling’s most bizarre title

Marigold wrestler Riara claimed the DDT Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship yesterday through highly questionable means, placing a plastic bag over the head of CyberFight Vice President and DDT founder Sanshiro Takagi to secure victory. The freelancer’s controversial tactics mark another chapter in the championship’s notorious history of unconventional title changes.

The incident occurred as Takagi, who serves as both a corporate executive and occasional wrestler, found himself on the receiving end of what can only be described as an attempted suffocation attack. With a referee present to count the subsequent pinfall, Riara officially became the latest champion of professional wrestling’s most unpredictable title.

The DDT Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship represents perhaps the most ridiculous concept in professional wrestling history. Created and first held by Poison Sawada in the year 2000, the title is based on the WWF Hardcore Championship’s infamous 24/7 Rule where the championship is up for grabs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The title can be defended or challenged for anywhere at anytime by anyone or anything and it doesn’t have to be at a DDT event-as long as a referee’s around that’s all it takes. This has led to a championship lineage that defies all conventional wrestling logic. The sheer absurdity of the title becomes apparent when examining its statistics. There have been 1,571 officially recognized reigns between 392 different human individuals, 7 teams and 44 inanimate objects and animals. This means the championship has changed hands more times than most wrestling titles have had matches.

The championship is viewed as a comedy championship, having had two wrestlers, Yuko Miyamoto and Shinobu, exchange the belt 62 times with each other in one night (some of those title changes via Rock, Paper, Scissors), being won from a wrestling fan winning an auction for the belt, and a title change that occurred in a dream.

Riara’s Controversial Victory

For Riara, a freelancer who primarily works for Marigold, capturing the DDT Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship represents both an opportunity and a challenge. While the title carries virtually no prestige in traditional wrestling terms, it does provide significant exposure and creative freedom.

The plastic bag attack on Takagi, while extreme even by DDT standards, fits perfectly within the championship’s tradition of unconventional victories. Previous title changes have included everything from dream sequences to auction purchases, making Riara’s suffocation tactics merely the latest entry in a catalog of bizarre championship moments.
